El Médano's got it all: waves, wind, and good weather
If you're seeking a year-round kitesurfing destination in Europe, look no further than Tenerife in the Canary Islands, situated just off the coast of Morocco. Although it may be less popular than Fuerteventura, also in the Canary Islands, Tenerife definitely deserves some love and praise.
El Médano, located in the south of Tenerife, is where all the kitesurfing action happens. The Playa del Médano, also known as South Bay or 'la Bahia', is the most popular spot, providing stunning views of the Montaña Roja. The spot generally caters more to freeride and freestyle riders, but if you're into wave riding, ride upwind for about 10 minutes towards Muelle (Harbour wall), for some nice and easy waves.
Tenerife's kite season
El Médano’s reputation as a world-class kitesurfing spot comes from its reliable northeast trade winds, known locally as the “Alisios,” which create excellent cross-onshore conditions with typical speeds between 15 and 25 knots.
The best kitesurfing season spans from May to October. In July and August, thanks to the Calima, a hot wind from Africa, wind speeds can exceed 35 knots—ideal for some Big Air and board-off tricks! When it comes to the weather, the sun shines most of the time and temperatures are comfortably warm, ranging from 25°C to 30°C.
Winter temperatures remain pleasant but the wind tends to be lighter and less consistent, so plan your kite trip between May and October for the best conditions.

The best waves are from June to August, but be cautious as the launch area is very tricky. It’s actually better to ride upwind, about 20 minutes, from the main kite beach. It's primarily a windsurfing area, so make sure you stay clear of windsurfers to avoid any conflicts. Also, only hit the spot if you're an expert!
