Kitesurf in Barcelona, home of the 37th America's Cup
Kitesurfing in Barcelona offers a stunning backdrop of the city skyline, which has recently gained global attention as the host of the Louis Vuitton 37th America's Cup events. The vibrant beaches and numerous kitesurfing spots within a 60 km radius cater to both beginners and advanced riders. The city's home spot is Bogatell, renowned for its lively community of kiters and wingfoilers.
While summer might seem like the perfect time to kite, there are some restrictions to keep in mind. Kitesurfing is prohibited on Barcelona’s city beaches and neighboring areas from June 5th to September 22nd. However, you can still find great conditions at alternative spots like Malgrat de Mar and a designated area in Castelldefels near the Bunker Kite Club, which is accessible on weekdays from 4 PM to 8 PM with prior registration. If you’re lucky, Premia de Mar’s lifeguards might let you kite until the end of July, depending on how crowded the beach is. All other areas are off-limits during this time.
Barcelona's kite season
The best kitesurfing season in Barcelona is from September to April. During this period, you’ll enjoy stronger winds with Levante and Gregal winds, blowing from the east and northeast, respectively. These winds typically range around 15 to 20 knots but can go up 25 to 30 knots, making it ideal for using a 7 to 10-meter kite.
From May to September, Barcelona experiences the thermal Garbí wind from the southwest. This wind provides lighter and steadier conditions, typically between 10 and 16 knots suitable for a 12 to 14-meter kite.
Throughout the year, the Tramuntana wind, a strong north wind, can occasionally appear in Costa Brava, north of Barcelona. While it offers challenging conditions for advanced kiters, it’s not recommended for beginners due to its intensity and offshore nature.
