The Skeleton Coast: Namibia's kitesurfing crown jewel

Namibia, located on the southwestern coast of Africa, offers a kitesurfing experience like no other. The country is renowned for its dramatic desert landscapes, where the majestic Namib Dunes meet the Atlantic Ocean. The Skeleton Coast, stretching from the Kunene River to the Swakop River, is the heart of Namibia's kitesurfing scene. Popular hotspots include Swakopmund, Walvis Bay, and the world-famous Lüderitz, home of the Lüderitz Speed Challenge, which typically takes place towards the end of the year.

Namibia's kite season

Namibia's kitesurfing season runs from September to March, with the best conditions typically found between September and December. During this period, the coast experiences powerful trade winds ranging from 15 to 30 knots. So you'll be riding 6m to 9m kites on most days.

Kitesurfing in Namibia isn't for the faint-hearted. The strong trade winds and the cold Atlantic waters mean that you’ll need to gear up. A full wetsuit is essential throughout most of the year, even in the summer. If you’re after laid-back sessions in boardshorts on the African coast, Namibia isn't what you're looking for—Kenya or Zanzibar would be better options.

However, If you’re after intense kitesurfing adventures with steady strong winds, some of the world's best waves, and flat water lagoons, Namibia’s Skeleton Coast is the perfect option.
