A guide to Mozambique's top spots and the ideal season to kite.

Mozambique's kitesurfing paradise

If you're planning a kitesurfing getaway in Africa, Mozambique should definitely be on your list. Stretching over 2,400 kilometers of Indian Ocean coastline, this African paradise has something for every kitesurfer.

The Bilene Lagoon is the crown jewel of Mozambique’s kitesurfing scene. Just a three-hour drive from Maputo, this expansive lagoon spans over 15 kilometers, offering perfect conditions for riders of all levels. Its shallow, uncrowded waters and consistent winds make it ideal for mastering new tricks or learning how to kitesurf from scratch.

But don’t stop there! Mozambique also boasts other fantastic kitesurfing spots. Vilanculos is another top destination, renowned for its shallow-water sandbanks and stunning views of the Bazaruto Archipelago. Then there’s Ponta do Ouro, located at the southernmost tip near the South African border, where you'll enjoy some Indian Ocean waves!

Now, let’s dive into what the kitesurfing season in Mozambique looks like. But before we do, if you’re traveling halfway across the world for your kitesurfing adventure, you might also want to consider Kenya. With spots like Diani Beach and Watamu, Kenya offers similar kitesurfing conditions to Mozambique and has plenty to offer for those days when the wind doesn’t show up.

Mozambique's kite season

Mozambique’s kitesurfing season hits its stride from September to March, with the southeastern “Kusi” winds providing reliable conditions. And with warm waters year-round, kitesurfing in Mozambique means you can leave your wetsuit at home!
