Dakhla: a kitesurf hotspot in the Western Sahara
On the southern coast of Morocco, Dakhla is a kitesurfing mecca nestled between the Western Sahara and the Atlantic Ocean. As one of the top stops of the GKA Kite World Tour—typically held around the end of September—Dakhla boasts 45 kilometers of endless lagoon, warm temperatures year-round, and strong winds. This destination provides ideal conditions for freestyle, big air, and excellent wave riding.
With its vast open spaces, consistent winds (even in July), and the distinctive charm of the Western Sahara, Dakhla offers the perfect setting for a classic eat, kite, sleep, repeat experience.
If you're dead set on a kite trip in Morocco, don't forget to check out Essaouira, another great kitesurfing spot you could stop by on your back home.
Dakhla's kite season
Dakhla is definitely at the very top of the list when it comes to kitesurfing destinations with consistent and strong winds. With over 300 windy days per year, it’s easy to see why! Mornings tend to be rather calm as thermal winds pick up in the afternoon—when the action begins.
April to September is the best time to kite, with June to August offering the best window for some guaranteed 35-knot winds. July and August see a high probability of wind, but be prepared for gusty conditions and a busy, choppy lagoon.
While December and January are considered off-season, winter still offers plenty of riding days with larger kites. If you're on the lookout for some wave-riding action, make sure to hit the Oum El Bouir spot between October and March.
Temperatures in Dakhla remain between 19-24°C year-round but can climb up to 40°C (104°F) on calm days. A long wetsuit is suitable throughout the year, but a shorty might be enough during the warmer summer months. Nights and early mornings can be chilly, so pack some warm layers and a windstopper!
